What are Dangerous Goods?
Dangerous Goods are identified and classified according to the code of practice SABS 0228. The law is rigid in this regard and once a substance has been classified as a Dangerous Good there are onerous and specific procedures that need to be followed and requirements to be met.

What is covered?
  1. The damages arising from the Spillage of the Dangerous Goods and the Clean Up Costs and Expenses are covered, we will attend to the clean-up process which means that we not only remove or deactivate the Dangerous Goods, but we will ensure that the area affected is restored to its former state.
  2. We will also provide legal representation for you should any legal proceedings be instituted against you.
  3. Bodily injury or death arising exclusively as a result of the Dangerous Goods Spillage.
  4. Damage to third party assets arising exclusively from the Dangerous Goods Spillage.
What is not covered?
  1. The Dangerous Goods itself
  2. Damage to transport vehicle or the other vehicle involved in the collision
  3. Bodily Injury or death to you or your employees or agents
  4. The event if it happens on your own premises or premises in your care, custody and control
  5. This cover can be provided separately as an Extension if so required
  6. Fines and penalties
  7. Contractually assumed liability
Requirements for cover
  1. There are a lot of requirements and you are expected to know them all and to comply with them. Given the risks involved, if you do not comply with these legal requirements, then there is no cover.
  2. Cover is only in respect of a sudden and unforeseen event.
  3. The claim must have occurred on or after the retroactive date and during the period of insurance.
  4. The Dangerous Goods must be in the process of being transported but includes the loading and unloading of the Dangerous Goods.
  5. The transportation must be by road along the route and during the hours and in accordance with the terms provided by the Authorities in a Vehicle that is legally permitted to carry Dangerous Goods.
  6. The driver must:
    a. Have the required PrDP-D that allows them to transport these Dangerous Goods;
    b. Be older than 25 years of age; and
    c. Have been trained specifically for the Dangerous Goods that they transport.
How to claim:
Stepp Truck and Cargo will have to be notified of the spillage as soon as possible, otherwise you will not be covered.
